The framing that wastes the decision
Synthetic creator content is cheaper and faster, and stopping the analysis there produces bad decisions, because the two options are not substitutes across every use. They differ in what they can credibly say, which is a more consequential difference than price.
The claim boundary
A real creator can say 'I used this for three months and here is what happened,' because they did. A synthetic presenter cannot make that statement honestly, and having one make it anyway is precisely the fabricated-testimonial problem that regulators treat most seriously.
This draws a clean line. Synthetic presenters work well for demonstration, explanation, and product-led narrative. They should not be used for personal experience, results claims, or endorsement, because those depend on a person having actually had the experience.
Getting this boundary right is not a constraint on the format so much as a definition of where it is strong.
Iteration is a structural advantage
The real advantage of synthetic production is not the unit cost of one asset; it is that changing something is cheap. A new hook, a different opening line, a variant for another market — these are re-renders rather than rebookings. That changes what kind of testing is affordable, which is a bigger strategic difference than the price of any single video.
Where synthetic breaks
Physical interaction with a product remains the hard case — hands, texture, scale, and the specific way real objects behave. Audiences are also becoming more calibrated, and a piece that sits in the uncanny middle performs worse than either a clearly synthetic or a clearly real one.
Committing to a look tends to beat approximating realism. The pieces that fail are usually the ones that were trying to pass.
What we are measuring
We are not publishing a synthetic-versus-real performance comparison because we do not yet have one that meets a standard worth citing. Quantivo's creative benchmark runs this comparison on our own apps, where we control spend and can disclose method and limitations honestly.
Comparisons circulating without stated methodology, sample size or spend should be treated as marketing for whichever side commissioned them.
